For those who don’t already know, Tassie performed really well at this years ALAC carnival, and CLAC was represented with some great performances, lots of PB’s and one of the team Captains was our own Tom McCallum. Tassie was able to bring home the Dick Healy trophy – awarded to the best performing smaller state.
On an individual level we need to recognise the fantastic performance of Will Robertson (Hopefully you have seen this on Facebook already) taking home the Silver in the 1500m race walk.
William’s medal was the first for Tasmania for the 2017 ALACS. Two other Tassie boys received bronze medals.
His time of 6.55 was approximately a 40 second PB from his State Championship time. We believe it is the second fastest time by any Tasmanian in that age group (not just Little Athletics). Although it does not qualify for records it would beat the CLAC and State record. Certainly the best performance by a CLAC athlete in the walks at ALACs. It was a very exciting race to watch with William battling with a Queensland athlete for the second place. After being overtaken early in the last lap William held his composure and waited until the last 200m to move to overtake and then held on for second place – to lots of cheering from the Tassie parents in the stand.
William is grateful for the support both financially and with lots of encouragement from CLAC. The commitment CLAC has shown to always having Walks events has meant that William has been able to develop his technique and practice at local meets. His coach Rosemary Coleman was also a wonderful mentor.
